1. Do you take an interest in nature?

I was born and brought up in this city and don’t get back to nature very often, I’m afraid. But like everyone else, I’m fascinated by the natural world and I like watching documentaries showing wild animals in their natural habitat.

2. Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold country?

I was born in Vietnam, a country with a tropical monsoon climate, so it is quite hot and humid. And my body has adapted to it. I like the hot weather when I can go to the beach in summer vacation and enjoy eating cream.

3. What is the best/worst weather for traveling in?

In my opinion, the best weather to travel is in a slight rainy season because it is the off-season, fewer traffic jams and lower prices for tickets and food. The important thing is that you don’t have to compete with other tourists by falling in line in terms of time in order to enjoy a tourist site. The worst weather to travel in is of course the typhoon season because it is safer to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas. Establishments are also closed and flights get cancelled.

4. Are there any environmental problems in your country?

Yes, like other nations, my country is experiencing several environmental issues. The most serious problem might be poor air quality. If you have to commute in the early morning, you would face smog, which is mainly caused by vehicle exhaust emission. This polluted air is really harmful to our health and our government is struggling to deal with the problem.

5. Do you or your family take steps to help the environment?

My parents have always tried to make us aware of our impact on the environment. They’re really into energy conservation by turning off lights or electronic appliances when unnecessary. We always try to buy environmentally friendly products and reuse nylon bags.

PART 2

Sample:

There are several environmental problems my country has to face but the one I’d like to talk about is the deforestation of vast areas.

This land clearance is on a huge scale and the forest is often just burned down or hacked down. The main reasons for this destruction are logging and farming. While slash-and-burn agriculture sends large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere which contribute to global warming and climate change, illegal logging is also a pressing issue in Vietnam. 

Large areas of scrubland and grasslands have emerged where deforestation has occurred. This leads to erosion and some serious disasters like flash floods or landslides which cause damage to persons and property. Just as important is the effect on the native wildlife. Deforestation destroys the natural habitat of many animals. In the other words, the destruction of the rich vegetation leads to very low levels of biodiversity and ecological imbalance. I don’t fully understand but I did read somewhere that it means that our food crops are more vulnerable to pests and diseases. This could lead to serious food shortages in the future.

I think the government needs to be more aggressive in tightening management and punishing illegal loggers. In addition, it is also important to raise people’s awareness of the consequences of deforestation and find measures for people to settle down and not clear the forest for farming. It is also the responsibility of each citizen to report to the authorities when loggers are discovered. 

I hope that deforestation will be tackled soon.

PART 3

1. Are people concerned about environmental problems in your country?

I think some people are concerned but probably not enough of them. Some take environmental problems seriously enough to actually reduce rubbish or reuse products appropriately. But I don’t think there are enough people who concern themselves with resource depletion, which I consider to be a pressing issue. So many people are using energy and buying products without any thought about the impact of their actions on the environment. We all know that the world’s resources are being used at an alarming rate but no one seems to actually feel it’s their responsibility to conserve natural resources. So, I guess, although some people are concerned, it’s not enough and more people in my country need to change the way they live.

2. What do you consider to be the world’s worst environmental disaster caused by humans?

I think that may be the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine which occurred in 1986. In that case, there was an explosion and nuclear meltdown. It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history both in terms of cost and casualties. It not only caused great loss of life but the environment was also badly affected and it is still affected today and could be for many years. Many people are still getting sick from the disaster and no one can live anywhere near the site. Of course, there are many other serious ones, some more recently such as the oil spills in Africa and the US.
