1. Giới thiệu dạng bài LABELING A DIAGRAM/ PLAN/ MAP

Đây là một trong các dạng bài listening ielts thường xuyên xuất hiện trong phần 2 của bài thi IELTS Listening. Dạng bài này sẽ cho sẵn một bản đồ, sơ đồ và yêu cầu bạn xác định địa điểm, thông tin có trong bản đồ hoặc sơ đồ. Thông thường, dạng bài này sẽ được chia làm 2 loại:

Loại 1: Có một danh sách các từ cần điền được cung cấp sẵn và bạn chỉ cần nghe và chọn đúng từ phù hợp để điền vào khoảng trống trên bản đồ, sơ đồ.

Loại 2: Sẽ không có danh sách nào được cho sẵn, bạn sẽ phải nghe và tự xác định địa điểm, thông tin đề điền vào bản đồ, sơ đồ.

Đây là dạng bài khá khó trong IELTS Listening vì sẽ không dễ để xác định phương hướng cũng như có khá nhiều ‘bẫy’ khiến bạn gặp nhiều khó khăn trong quá trình làm bài.

2. Các bước làm bài

– Bước 1: Đọc kỹ yêu cầu của đề bài và xác định số từ cần phải điền trong đề bài nếu bài không cho danh sách các từ cần điền.

Trong ví dụ 2, chúng ta chỉ được điền không quá 3 từ ‘NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS’

– Bước 2: Phân tích kỹ bản đồ, sơ đồ: đọc tiêu đề để nắm được nội dung khái quát của bài nghe, xác định vị trí bắt đầu và vị trí của từng địa điểm ở câu hỏi để xác định được hướng mô tả bản đồ, sơ đồ. Tuy nhiên một số bản đồ, sơ đồ không ghi chú rõ ràng vị trí bắt đầu nên bạn phải dự đoán điểm bắt đầu.

Chẳng hạn như trong ví dụ 2, tiêu đề của sơ đồ là ‘Plan of the British Library’ (Sơ đồ thư viện Anh) nên nội dung của bài nghe sẽ về cấu trúc của thư viện. Vị trí bắt đầu mô tả sơ đồ có thể từ ‘Main Entrance’. Theo thứ tự câu hỏi thì sơ đồ thư viện có thể được mô tả từ dưới lên và từ phải qua trái.

– Bước 3: Nghe mô tả về vị trí của địa điểm và xác định từ cần điền.

3. Lưu ý khi làm bài

– Trong trường hợp bản đồ, sơ đồ không ghi chú điểm bắt đầu, bạn cần nghe thật kỹ để xác định vị trí bắt đầu của hướng mô tả.

– Trong quá trình làm bài, bạn nên dùng bút để đi theo hướng mô tả để tránh bỏ lỡ thông tin hoặc bị mất tập trung.

– Chú ý đến các từ chỉ địa điểm, phương hướng như: on the left/right (bên trái/phải), opposite (đối diện), in the northeast (nằm ở hướng Đông Bắc), in the southwest (nằm ở hướng Tây Nam), in the corner of (nằm trong góc của), turn left/right (rẽ trái/phải), …

Now, a word about the layout of the building. The auditorium, stage and dressing rooms for the actors are all below ground level. Here on the ground floor we have most of the rooms that the public doesn’t see. The majority are internal, so they have windows in the roof to light them.
Standing here in the foyer, you’re probably wondering why the box office isn’t here, where the public would expect to find it. Well, you might have noticed it on your way in – although ¹⁷it’s part of this building, it’s next door with a separate entrance from the road.
¹⁸For the theatre manager’s office, you go across the foyer and through the double doors, turn right, and it’s the room at the end of the corridor, with the door on the left.
¹⁹The lighting box is where the computerised stage lighting is operated and it’s at the back of the building. When you’re through the double doors turn left, turn right at the water cooler, and right again at the end. It’s the second room along that corridor. The lighting box has a window into the auditorium, which of course is below us.
²⁰The artistic director’s office is through the double doors, turn right and it’s the first room you come to on the right-hand side. And finally, for the moment, the room where I’ll take you next – the relaxation room. So if you’d like to come with me …

Right, well, here we are, standing at the Meeting Point on the lower ground floor just to the right of the Main Entrance. I’ve given you all a plan of the building so that we can orientate ourselves and get an idea of where we’ll be going. Now outside the Main Entrance you’ll see the wide Piazza with the stunning sculpture of Newton.
¹⁶The sculptor was Paolozzi, but it’s based on the famous image by William Blake – and it’s definitely worth a closer look. On the other side of the Piazza from the statue is the Conference Centre, which is used for all kinds of international conventions. We’ll take a quick look inside at the end of our tour.
¹⁷Looking ahead of us now, you’ll see that we’re standing opposite the staircase down to the basement where you’ll find the cloakroom, and to the left of that, we have the information desk where you can find out about any current exhibitions, the times of the tours and anything you need to know – if you don’t have a tour guide. ¹⁸As you can see, on this lower ground floor we also have a bookshop that’s the area over to the left of the main entrance. You’ll be free to browse there when we get back to the ground floor.
Now, opposite the main entrance on this floor we have the open stairs leading up to the upper ground floor. ¹⁹And at the top of them, in the middle of the upper ground floor, you can see a kind of glass-sided tower that rises all the way up through the ceiling and up to the first floor. This is called the King’s Library, it’s really the heart of the building, it was built to house the collection that was presented to the nation in 1823 by the King. You can see it from every floor above ground. When we go up there, you’ll find the library’s Treasures Gallery on the left. Can you find it on your plan? That’s the exciting one, so we’ll be visiting that first but ²⁰we’ll also take a look at the stamp display situated behind it, on the way to the cafe – a lot of people miss that. The Cafeteria runs along the back of the floor and, in the right hand corner, you’ll find the lifts and toilets … ha, always good to locate them. The other main area on that floor is the Public Access Catalogue section and I’ll show you how that operates when we get up there …
