1. Giới thiệu dạng bài Short Answer Questions

Dạng bài này yêu cầu sử dụng từ trong bài nghe để trả lời câu hỏi với một giới hạn từ nhất định. Đây là dạng bài không xuất hiện thường xuyên trong bài thi IELTS Listening những năm gần đây, tuy nhiên bạn không nên bỏ qua dạng bài này vì đây là dạng bài tương đối khó.

2. Các bước làm bài

Cách làm IELTS Listening Short Answer Questions như sau:

– Bước 1: Đọc kĩ yêu cầu bài để xác định số từ cần điền.
Như ở ví dụ trên, chúng ta được điền không quá ba từ và/hoặc 1 số ‘NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER’.

– Bước 2: Đọc câu hỏi, xác định từ khóa.
Trong câu 26 ‘How did the students do their practical sessions?’, từ khóa có thể là ‘How, students, practical sessions’ (Như thế nào, học sinh, các tiết thực hành).

– Bước 3: Tập trung nghe để làm bài. Sau khi hoàn thành, hãy kiểm tra lại chính tả cũng như ngữ pháp trong câu.

3. Lưu ý khi làm bài

– Trong quá trình nghe, bạn hãy thật tập trung để không bỏ lỡ thông tin quan trọng.

– Câu hỏi sẽ được paraphrase lại so với thông tin trong bài nghe nên bạn cần chú ý đến những từ đồng nghĩa của các từ khóa khi làm bài.

– Chú ý đến giới hạn từ của câu trả lời vì nếu thừa từ thì câu trả lời của bạn sẽ không được tính điểm.

Paul: And how was your timetable? Was it a very busy year?
Kira: Very, very busy. They make you work very hard. ²⁶Apart from lectures, we had practical sessions in a lot of subjects. We did these in small groups. I had to go and work four hours every week in a community pharmacy. Actually, I enjoyed this very much – meeting new people all the time. Then ²⁷in second semester, we had to get experience in hospital dispensaries, so every second day we went to one of the big hospitals and worked there. And on top of all that we had our assignments, which took me a lot of time. Oh, I nearly forgot, ²⁸between first and second semesters, we had to work full-time for two weeks in a hospital.
Paul: That does sound a very heavy year. So are you pleased now that you did it? Do you feel some sense of achievement?
Kira: Yeah, ²⁹I do feel much more confident, which I suppose is the most important thing.
Paul: And have you got any recommendations for people who are studying from overseas?
Kira: Well, I suppose they need very good English. It would be much better if they spent more time learning English before they enter the university, because you can be in big trouble if you don’t understand what people are saying and you haven’t got time to translate.
Paul: Anything else?
Kira: Well, as I said before, ³⁰the biggest problem for me was a lack of familiarity with the education system here.
Paul: It sounds as if it was a real challenge. Congratulations, Kira.
Kira: Thanks, Paul.
